I am trying to get my older laptop networked with my desktop to share files and a broadband internet connection. The desktop has a USB WiFi Card, and the laptop a CardBus wiFi adaptor. However, I cannot for the life of me figure out what needs to be done to get them connected. I have XP set to share internet & files, and it can (i think) see the laptop, but it can't do anything from that point, as the laptop doesn't show up elsewhere. Also, the laptop doesn't see anything at all. I get the message "network cable unplugged". I have turned on 2000's Internet Connection Sharing & Wireless Networking services, but still no luck... don't really know what to do next. Thanks in advance for the help!.

Desktop:
Athlon-XP 2800+/2.08
512MB RAM
Win XP Home, SP2

Laptop:
PentiumII, 266
160MB RAM
Win 2000 Pro, SP4

You realize of course in addition to setting to "sharing" you also have to individually set the files and/or folders you want to share to "share"?

I.e.
right click Start
and left click Explorer
left click a file or folder you desire to share - lets say C: drive...right click on it and select "sharing"...
Things diverge at this point depending on if you are setting up XP or 2000. But at this point you now have the ability to set the drive/file/folder to share.

Once you share the drive/file/folder it should show up in network connection.

Hi,
Well can u provide more details of ur setup like make of router etc?
first go 2 device manager and make sure that the wireless adapter is ENABLED.
1.For the laptop 2 work,u must have the same ssid and channel number stup on its wi fi card.U may use the configuration utility of ur wi fi card on laptop 2 set this 2 match the ssid etc on the router and desktop.

2. The Ip address should be in the same subnet. if ur router has dhcp enabled then set ur laptop 2 obtain ip address automatically.Check it by giving "ipconfig/all" without quotes at the command prompt.
See if u are able to get the signal. Else go to services in control panel and restart the Zero configuration service.

chow let me know...
