I don't really know a whole lot about computers, but I was wondering, is there a way for me to be able to expand the distance that my laptop will pick up signal? I wondered if there was some product on the market that I could plug into my computer that would allow me to get wifi signal from fairly long distances. If there isn't, what is a good alternative?

That is nearly impossible. You can't boost reception with your laptop, the signal has to be a lot stronger at the router. Normal routers you can buy will go max of about 1000 ft with walls in between. You might be able to find someone who can rebuild a router, and make it stronger, because the FCC puts a max on router distances. So the wifi idea from long distance away is not going to work, but if you want to have totally portable internet, I would suggest getting mobile brand, which is provided by cell phone companies. You can get modems that go in your PC card slot, or that plug into your USB ports.
