Subject: WiFi and Ethernet Driver Conflict??
OS: Windows 98
CPU/Ram: Pentium III/192MB
Comment:

After I install my Netgear MA401 WiFi card, none of my networking applications work (ping, telnet, Internet Explorer, etc.) Furthermore, Outlook Express crashed with a fatal error, and Internet Explorer crashed, wants to send a "Problem Report" to Microsoft, then closes itself.
I have an active, wired Ethernet connection to my WiFi router before, during, and after the Wifi install. Both the Ethernet card and the WiFi card are in adjacent type II PCMCIA slots. Windows 98 Device Manager does not seem to show any device conflicts.
My WiFi cards is not yet configured with an SSID, so I don't expect it to be able to connect yet, so:

1) How does Windows 98 know which network connection to try to use?

2) Why do IE and Outlook Express crash so fataly? Why can't they just report something like "page not found" or "mail server not available"

3) Am I causing some kind of device driver conflict? If memory serves me, removing the WiFi card does NOT clear this problem - I have to restore the registry (which I've learned to back up when doing this...)

Thanks if you can help,
Joey.

Q1 It doesn't. It just uses the first one it finds that is active. There are ways of forcing it to use a particular connection.

Q2 I doesn't. The problems you are getting are more than just "page not found" and "mail server not available". Most likely corrupted winsock settings.

Q3 Why have both an Ethernet and Wifi active together? Is it really necessary? Install one. Get that working. Remove it and install the other. It's a five second job to remove and replace an adaptor as required.

Stuart
