Basically i have a belkin wifi cardbus plugged into my laptop. Latest drivers installed, xp's on sp3 everything is working fine and updated, the only problem is, every time the computer is turned off andf then back on again it loses connectivity to the network and needs to be repaired in order to function. It doesn't happen 100% of the time, only mainly after the laptop has been switched off over night.

as soon as it is repaired it works fine for the duration of the use of the laptop. I use windows to configure the wireoless connection too, not elkins utility (i didn't even install that, I just used the driver only package).

I don't see why it should keep doing this. Whern I've inspected the status of the connection when it occurs it seems as though it isn't being assigned an ip address, or at least it isn't bothering to renew it.

Not that it should need to renew the ip address, since the router is setup to have dhcp, but to always give the same ip address to the same clients.

I've tried several things, I found one solution to clear the winsock catalogue using the command line but when I did that my security software's \firewall exceptions got all screwed up and had to be reinstalled (only it wouldn't reinstall for some god forsaken reason, so I ended up having to restore the computer to before I reset the winsock cat.

The router also used to assign ip addresses dynamically, I changed it to assign them permanently and it made no difference.

I cannot accertain if the problem is something to do with windows, the drivers being flaky, or if it the router. Either way the ideal work around I can think of would be to make it so when the computer starts up it repairs the connection automatically without any windows popping up or anything but I don't have any idea how to do that (assuming it is even possible).

Any help would be appreciated.

If you really don't have other solutions, then maybe you can give this winsockfix a try, see whether it helps..
