i have a linksys router. i got 3 computers hooked up to it along with comcast cable. theres my computer, my sisters computer, and the guy that lives upstairs from me. my question is why when i look at workgroup computers, i can only see myself and my sisters computer and not the guy upstairs computer. me and my sister has xp pro and he has xp home. hes got a dell and me and my sister both have customs built by ourselves. on his last computer i used to be able to see when he was up. now i never know and i wanna know so i can find out where my peak network speeds are. what settign could be enabled or what?

If he is on a different workgroup, that might do it. Otherwise he may be on a different subnet mask - I had problems with this on my net, and had to manually set the subnets on each machine.

Is he running ZoneAlarm or other software firewall? That will block you seeing him.

"i wanna know so i can find out where my peak network speeds are"

Just because you could see him does not mean there is a connection between bandwidth usage. There is not. He could just be browsing and not downloading. Downloading is what takes up bandwidth for any substained time.

he doesnt have a firewall, and:
"i wanna know so i can find out where my peak network speeds are"
the guy doesnt keep him computer on, so when ever his computers on, hes on.
im pretty sure hes got the same workgroup..is there any way i could check without going to him? i thinks its MShome or WORKGROUP....and as for subnet mask stuff, eh i wont go that far with this
thanx

just because you share the router doesn't mean he is on your LAN. Does he want you to access his computer? I bet not.

Ask him when he is online. Do you have a contract with him about sharing the network?

Riot,

Surf the net for some SMTP sniffer and analysis tools, they are out there free and they will show all users and bandwidth, regardless of security, because they measure packets and signatures not connnections.

Well if you have the router wiht you, you can just look at the link light and see when his PC is on. Also, most routers have a logging settigns which logs where computers go and what computer. If you enable that and look at the log it will show you if his computer is on. Or, you could jsut ping his IP address and if yo uget a response he is on. THis all sounds a little fake to me. Are you tryign to hack his computer or somehtign or what?

as pointed out before you can get this information from the router. If you want to know if he is on just logon to the router and look at the Connected Devices or similar named page. You will see everyone that is on listed by computer name.

You cannot see his comp because XP Home's default workgroup is 'mshome' get him to change it to 'workgroup' on his machine
