Why can't we use MAC addresses to send messages between computers? I was just wondering why aren't routers designed so that they can use MAC addresses instead of IPs?

You invent the protocol, and we'll try it!

It's just like saying why dont we use car's VIN number as its license plate # as well.

The thing is you can't use LAN based technoglogy for WAN networks. There is no way you can manipulate MACs, summarize them etc. IPs you can.

Thanks.

Not sure if the entire web is built upon devices that use mac address. I am sure it is built of IP address.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

Somebody needs to review the OSI model starting at layer 2. Ip which is at layer 3 can't work without layer 2.

Knowing the correct answer and giving a correct answer, are two different things
