Comment: I have two pc's running Windows XP Pro and Windows XP Home. They aren't far apart, just about 2 metres. They both have built-in realteck nic's. and i already snitched a long enough piece of cabling form the office. Will i need a hub?, it's only two computers! Do i just connect the two computers with the cable? Will that work? I use dial-ups and the Windows XP Pro computer is the most powerful of the two.

Reply: (edit)For 2 pcs only network, you don't need a hub, but you must need a cross over cable

Reply: (edit)Kid, What you do is enable "TCP/IP" "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "File and print sharing" on both PC's. Then go to the properties of TCP/IP and then go to Bindings, make sure that it is bound to "Client for Microsoft Networks". Then On both machines go to the properties of TCP/IP and give one of them an IP Address of 192.168.0.1 and the other 192.168.1.1. Then give them both a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. After that go to "Client for Microsoft Networks" then to "Identification" and give them both a work group name of "Workgroup". After that, go to the properties of "File and Print Sharing" make sure that is enabled and that everything in it is enabled. After that, give each a name, a specific name. You have to do everything I just said exactly on both computers, Then re-boot the mahcines. Once you restart go to the "Start Menu" then to "Run" type in "Command" and then ti should bring up a dos box. If it doesnt try "cmd". You need to ping the other machine making sure it can see it, so type in "Ping 192.168.1.1" and if u get a response your setup and ready to go. But remember, if ur on the mahcine with the ip address of 192.168.1.1 u have to ping 192.168.0.1 as it is the other machine. Read these instrcutions carefully and u wont go wrong. Good Luck, Cya ash
