What would cause large internet downloads to fail/time out?

May 19, 2014 at 19:52:24
Specs: Windows 7
I'm trying to determine what the problem is or where to start even. I download files online sometimes that are in excess of 300MB or more.. and ever since I switched services with my ISP I can't download files anymore without them timing out. What might cause the issue? I know it's not the browser I've tried it with Chrome, Firefox, IE, etc., does this sound like the ISP itself?

Any ideas appreciated.

If your ISP service is the only thing that has changed then that would be the first thing to check - phone their support and ask them to check their logs - they can tell you exactly when problems occurred and possibly provide a solution.

If you changed hardware as well, modem for example, then that could also be the culprit so can you try using the original modem. If it is an ADSL line then make sure filters are attached to every working extension - even one missing or faulty can cause drop-outs like this.

Aside from possible hardware issues with the new ISP, which is a good place to start, you may have set a static DNS or network setting which maybe needs to be changed. You do not say whether or not you have a router or a modem from the ISP or a modem/router combo, but even if it were your network card settings, the ISP should be able to help resolve those kinds of things.

To err is human but to really screw things up, you need a computer!
