Subject: What is this wire for?
OS: XP Home
CPU/Ram: x86 / 1Gb
Model/Manufacturer: Dell Dim8200
Comment:
I purchased a 3Com 905CX network card for satellite hookup from NewEgg but it came with no instructions. I plugged it to the MB like any other card, but I don't know about the included 3-pin twisted wire connector.
What is it for?
Where does it connect?
Will the card work without it?
Can someone shed light on this?
Thanks.

Are you talking about the Remote Wakeup Cable? The connector is on the NIC (hint: it's white.) Picture here: http://c1.neweggimages.com/NeweggIm...

If that's what you're referring to, you don't need it.

Just out of curiosity though, why did you buy a PCI NIC? The 8200 should already have a NIC installed.

Life's more painless for the brainless.

Thanks for your replies.

XPUser: yes, I Googled setup instructions but found no reference to said cable.

Jennifer: It must be the Remote Wakeup Cable - it fits onto what you describe, and what is shown in your linked image, as the NIC. Years ago, when I ordered this computer from Dell I guess I opted to not have an NIC installed. We thought the phone company would surely have DSL to us by now, but no hope in sight for that in our lifetime, hence the impending satellite hookup and need for NIC.
