Hello everyone,
I'm trying to foind out my little sisters IP address so that i
can remote desktop with her computer when she needs
help. The problem is, I can't work out her real IP address.I run cmd prompt, type ipconfig /all but the ip address
given is some 10.0.0.3 garbage, not a real ip address.
Copy and paste:Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]

much.

P.S. She directly connects to the internet through an adsl
modem, which is connected to the computer via an
ethernet cable. (pretty common setup I'd imagine)

10.0.0.3 is a real IP address. It is a Class A private address. Normal when operating through a router with NAT.
Whatismyip will give you your public IP address which is the IP address of the router.

"given is some 10.0.0.3 garbage, not a real ip address."
why do you think that is not a real ip address? She gets on the internet right? If it works it must be real
Are you ready for where Microsoft wants you to go today?

Of course, if she is behind a NAT device you will need to have port 3389 in that device forwarded to her computer. Another alternative to that is for her to initiate "Remote Assistance" to you. This is another MS application built into the OS, the main difference is that both of you can view/control the desktop at the same time.

I've got IPs in the 10 range. They most certainly are "Real". Authentic, valid, and functional even. :)
Life's more painless for the brainless.

You could also use a free website program called... www.no-ip.com - sign up for that and install on sisters machine and you can login with a user name like my-sisters-pc.no-ip.com instead of an IP address. this is also helpful if she doesnt have a static IP address and hers is an always changind dynamic IP...

That's called Dynamic DNS. Useful if you are hosting a Web Server or FTP server with a dynamic IP address.
Probably a bit of overkill for occasional access for a bit of trouble shooting.
Stuart

Since your sister is using adsl connection, 10.0.0.3 is home network IP, it's private IP. There is 1 more WAN IP that used by adsl modem/router to access to Internet.
Easy way to check WAN IP of Cable/DSL connection
You need to enable remote access port forwarding on the your sister's home router, so that you can remote desktop access to your sister's computer from Internet.
Remote Desktop Connection from Internet
Hope helps..
