All network devices have a MAC address burned into them at the factory and no two are alike. The first part of the address is the manufacturer's code and the second part is unique to every individual device manufactured. This is how networking devices uniquely identify devices on the network. IP addresses are a sort of software identifier patched onto the MAC identifier.
