As a signal passes through the conductive material, some of its initial 'strength' or power is lost. Also the conductor itself can introduce noise, either by induction or external interference. The unit of measure for this SIGNAL to NOISE ratio is decibels [dB].

DB loss is the logarithm of the ratio of the end signal to the original signal.

No loss, 0dB, means that the signal power out is the same at that applied - great.

Number of DBs = 10 log(P2/P1) where Pi is the power of the signal.

Note that when you use sound pressure levels you must use 20 log (S2/S1), since
log(a^2) = 2log(a)
