Guys, I need help with a problem I'm working on for a friend. She's using Embarq for her ISP and currently has a functioning 660 Series modem.

We purchased a Westell Versalink ADSL 327 so that she can also use a laptop wirelessly. The modem was originally a Verizon product (indicated by the Verizon logo on the device.)

All wire/cable connections are fine. The DSL is indicating connectivity when I access the modem through it's IP address. However, the Internet light on the modem/router stays red, and the PPP connection will NOT connect and times out when I attempt to connect.

I have reset the modem several times (had to since there was a userid and password we didn't know), and still no joy. We called Embarq to see if they had any ideas and they just suggested I Google, which I did with no success.

Is it possible there is something hardwired into the modem to make it so that operation is only possible with Verizon DSL connectivity? I've never heard of that, but I suppose anything is possible.

I have Verizon at home, so I'm going to take it there and test it, but if it works there that would confirm the "proprietary" access correct? And how to get around that??

Any help is appreciated...

Jennifer -

1. Are you sure Embarg support this type of modem/router combo? If in doubt contact Embarg Tech Support and ask

http://www.embarq.com/Support/Resid...

2. See if you can find resolution by visiting DSLReport has Embarg DSL FAQ page below

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/sfc

3. Have you looked up Westell Tech Support site?

Verizon happen to be my ISP. From what I understand, Verizon has replaced Westell with Actiontec as their supplier of modem/router.

I may be wrong but I think both Westell & Actiontec modem/routers are meant to work only with Verizon DSL.

Quoted: Be reminded that Embarq does not support any ADSL modem purchased elsewhere.

The easiest thing to do is just connect Linksys Wireless-G Access Point to an ethernet port on the modem your friend is using.

I was pressed for time, and didn't check the Westell website. Thanks for the info. It appears that this Westell modem was specifically designed for Verizon. I guess that means it won't work with Embarq. S**t..

Thanks for the responses...

You;re welcome, Jennifer. I guess the Verizon logo on the Westell box should be taken as the telltale sign that it is designed to work only with Verizon DSL, just like Motorola modems is for Comcast, Optimumonline & other ISPs. The only modems & routers not designed for use with any particular ISP are manufactured by Linksys & D-Link

To avoid future recurrence of the same situation, I recommend that you start HERE to quickly gather what you can about a particular ISP and their hardware requirements.

Hope this help (btw you're not alone here with this dilemma - I myself also learned something about it as I research the net for relevant info to compose this post).

I just assumed that Verizon "slapped" their logo on the modem. I never would have thought that the modem was designed specifically for one ISP.

Just on a whim, I tested it on my Verizon DSL line. Works like a charm. There was a recommendation from Embarq support (via chat) to ensure that the settings are as follows:

VPI/CCI 8,35
Encapsulation LLC-Based
Operations Mode DMT-T1413

I don't know what those are, nor could I find anything for those settings/values in the configuration of the modem.

Neither could I in the same 327 I have as the one in question. BTW I use both address - less the parenthesis - (http://dslrouter) & (http://192.168.1.1) to access the router configuration. I looked throu every options and couldn't find the right page that would enable me to input the info.

BTW the info given you through your online chat with gthe ISP TS is exactly the same I gave you in the first link in Post No. 2.
