Weird Internet behaviour

Specs: Windows XP SP3
Hi, I've been having this problem for a while now and can't find any logical reason for it - if i try to stream video or download a file from a website, my computer appears to connect, download 250k or so then stop. then after a while it'll download another 100k then stop again.

The weird thing is if I use bittorrent, i can get constant speeds of over 200kps - and i know it's not just because i'm connected to multiple sources as sometimes i'll be connected to just one seeder and the speed will remain constant.

I also know it isn't my computer, as i've also tried a laptop which exhibits the same behaviour, and also my housemate has similar issues with his Mac.

We are connecting through a Netgear DSL Modem Internet Gateway DG814, and while the internet is still useable it's bloody annoying and driving me mental - please can someone help?

Thanks in advance...

Since 3 computers have the same problem, I would try another router. Tell the ISP that you need another router.

Thanks, I'm planning to try that sometime soon with an old Talktalk modem I have from a previous house (my ISP doesn't give out free routers).

A strange thing happened yesterday, I downloaded a file from CNET and it came down at a constant 140 Kbps. Thinking my problem had magically resolved itself, i tried to download something else from a different site but had the same old problem. Bah...
