I have a file sharing issue I need help with.. I have 2 Pc’s connected Via Dlink D604 Router.. they are both able to connect to the internet fine.. I wanted to move some files from one Pc to another. They are both in the same work group. And I enabled File sharing on each PC and then selected the drives or files on each PC I wanted them to be able to access.. now what is odd is that I then rebooted both of them. When I went to network neighborhood.. on ONE of the PC’s I was able to see Both Pc’s names.. which was fine. On the OTHER one.. it didn’t show Either.. on the ONE that DID show both Pc’s.. I tried clicking on the opposite PC to see if I was able to access files. And it told me it was unable to find that computer???.. I don’t get it. I am not sure what is going on with this. When I reboot again. Then the First PC will no longer show Both Pc’s and then the Second one will show only itself.. what on earth am I doing wrong???.. any help in this would be greatly appreciated ..

On the LAN connection properties on each PC ensure you've got "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" selected on the WINS tab.

isnt this for winNt ?? i dont find that when i right click on network neighborhood in win 98.. i am stil unable to connect.. and how do i verify my Ip as auto or manual?? i thought i knew where this was at..

OK - I spotted XP at the top of your message and not the 98. I'm not familiar with the DLINK router, or how it requires IP addresses to be set on the PCs. I wouldn't worry too much about that for the moment, you need to get both PC's to see each others NetBIOS names. I suggest installing NETBEUI on both. It's a simple, older file-sharing protocol which actually performs the pants off TCP/IP. If that doesn't help, post back

Yeah I tried installing the NetBui last night. and again ran it on both PC’s…. again. I went to each one. And made set each configuration for “client for Microsoft Networks” .. and then I also had “file and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks” installed as well. .. then I clicked on “file and Print sharing” and set each for I want to share files .. so that should be all I need to do as far as I know. Now as for the DLINK router. Both PC’s can access the internet so they are seeing up to that point and I believe they can see THROUGH the router as well. Once I reboot both PC’s.. it appears that only ONE of the PC’s will show in the Network Neighborhood.. BOTH PC ID’s .. and they are both in the same workgroup. Which seems fine.. but then I go to the other PC.. and that network Neighborhood is Blank. This is what does not make sense to me. I mean the one can see the other but then the other is totally blank. It does not even see itself.. I am pulling my hair out over this. It should not be that difficult. I don’t know what I am doing wrong with this.. so then if I reboot again. at times it will reverse and the OTHER PC sees the one but then the other one does not. I don’t get it. This is the most bizarre thing I have ever seen.. any other ideas?? I have gone to networking sites and have yet to see anything like this..

Something is either missing, or perhaps more likely is getting in the way of your filesharing. I'll do a bit of research on that router and see if I can come up with anything. Frustrating, I know - it can be either very simple, or sometimes very difficult to get filesharing to work, as a Google search would show. You're not alone in having this problem, though it's usually internet sharing people have problems with.

Maybe this will help. Once you've got static IPs on both machines we can take it from there.

well the static IP address didnt work .. as a matter of fact.. once i did that i was unable to access the internet so i had to disable all that stuff.. grrr. like i said. it seems that at tiems they can both see each.. jsut not at the same time. as at times one will show them both and at other tiems the toher one wil show. .. but not at teh same time. and even with the one showing both ID's.. you still cannot access the other Pc.. since the other does not show the first.. sigh..

Two things to check, 1.a personal firewall on each pc. 2. Are you logged on as a user. Meaning- when I had windows 98 and started the computer by pushing cancel or had it start without logging onto a person, it would not show or access shares on the network neighborhood. In which case you just go to start and log off and then log on with a name.
