I'm hoping someone will be able to help me with this rather irritating problem. I loaded a web server(Abyss web server) on two different PCs with different firewalls with the same results: the web page can not be displayed from the internet. Locally, using localhost and 127.0.0.1, everything is fine. My ISP says they do not block port 80. I do not have a domain name. I am trying to access using http://ipaddress/ I've thought of some approaches to this problem. Let me know if I'm on the right track. I was going to try another port, say 1000, and also try to access from another wireless network than the one I've been using for testing up until now. I was also wondering if a domain name might help since DNS uses name to ipaddress resolution and vice versa. If there is no name associated with my personal server then maybe DNS can't find it? My ISP fully qualified ip address(which comes up when I do a ping) is pool.ipaddress.phil.east.verizon.net which resolves to just ipaddress. I was wondering if I could make an lmhosts entry with this info on the PC trying to access the web page from the internet and if that would make any difference. I've read somewhere that this kind of IP address is on a private network and won't work with personal web servers. Is that correct? Since I've tried this on two different PCs with two different firewalls, I've ruled out it being a firewall issue. Any thoughts, suggestions are welcome.

On the machine running the webserver, go to http://www.whatismyip.com/ to verify the public IP address. Then, if you are using a router you need to make sure you are forwarding port 80 traffic from the router to the webserver. Once that is done you should be able to acces the web server externally using the IP address found above.

MichaelJ,
Thanks for responding. I'll try what you suggested. I'm not using a router, just a host firewall. I've added the web server program to it's list of allowable programs and also permitted incoming traffic to port 80. Do I need to do anything else? About the IP address...I've noticed my public ip address when I post on this forum when the forum asks if you want to confirm your post...I wonder if it's the same address I would find at whatismyip?

The IP address that this site displays is your public IP address. Don't know why you are having problems at whatismyip.com, but that doesn't matter.

Is that the IP address you are using when trying to connect from a remote computer?

MichaelJ,
I made a typo...that's why I was having trouble. I went to whatismyip.com and the IP displayed was what I'd thought it'd be. And yes, this is the ip I am using to connect from the remote computer. I am typing this: http://151.199.203.28/(not the same all the time) and it keeps saying web page can not be found. My next strategy is to use a different port and see what that does. In browsing some of the forums on the net, it appears this is a common problem among users of personal web servers.

I suggest you get a dynamic DNS. YOu can get a free one at no-ip.com (there are others as well).

You can set up a "domain" such as yourname.no-ip.com. You then run a small applicatin on your computer that keeps their records up-o-date with your IP address. You will then be able to access your web server using the domain you set up no matter how often your IP changes.

This may have nothing to do with your problem, but it will help in the future so you don't have to keep mnitoring your IP address.
