I'm at my friend's apartment and between the two of us
and his wife, we have three laptops here. Two Windows
laptops and one Apple. We also have a Nintendo DS and a
Nintendo Wii. Out of these five wireless devices, only one
of them works fine without ever having any problems, and
that is my friend's Windows laptop. As for my Windows
laptop and the Apple laptop and the DS and Wii, all of
them suffer from the same symptoms. They all work very
sporadically. Sometimes they work, other times they don't.
Trying to watch videos on YouTube isn't any fun because
it kind of loads and then stops loading and then you have
to refresh the page and then hope it works. The Nintendo
Wii tries connecting to the Wii Shop channel and gives us
an error but then the next minute it works.

It's a D-Link router. We've changed the channel to 11 and
we've moved it out into a hallway which is fairly central in
the apartment. We don't know why just his Windows
laptop works and everything else doesn't. Any help would
be appreciated. Thanks!

What a mess! I hate installing WiFi in apartments, it can be tricky. Try using NetStubler http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/ on the Windows laptop to scan the area for other WiFi Routers/Access Points and their channels they're using.

Troubleshooting WiFi connections: If you are having trouble connecting with WEP, check your SSID (service set identifier) settings and change the default SSID that comes with your router to something unique. By changing your SSID you won't be connecting to your neighbors router with the same SSID. Check your Channel number and try other channels (1, 6 or 11) if you are having trouble connecting. Another thing to note is if other wireless devices are in your vicinity (cordless phones in same band, 2.4 GHz phones can interfere with 802.11b and g routers) that may be causing interference.

also ensure that wireless card in your windows laptop is fully compatible with the router at your place

make sure both operate on same speed like 54mbps and also upgrade the drivers for wireless card if possible
