WAN between 2 buildings, 1000ft

Currently we have two buildings approx 1000ft apart networked via RAD tinybridge-100 over a 4-wire phone line. Everything works fine (unless one of the tinybridges die) when the system is operational, only 4 computers at the remote building. Lightning reaks havoc on the two bridges!
The problem i have is the local phone company that installed the WAN connection is trying to charge us a 100% mark-up on a $480 tinybridge from RAD. I could buy the parts direct and install it my self, no problem. I was just wondering if there was a better solution to networking the two buildings together.
I thought about terminal server but that would include an internet connection monthly charge at the remote building.

You could go the VPN route or, depending on budget you could look at a single mode fiber optic cable between locations. Also, you could look into an enterprise level wireless point-to-point shot between buildings.
If it were me, I'd take a look at all the alternatives, including buying your own bridge equipment, and go with the most cost effective.
