Hi all

Recently installed a 4-port fast ethernet hub and set up my home network. I have installed a Wake On Lan (WOL) cable into the computer which has access to the internet so that I can wake this machine up remotely whenever I want to connect to the internet from a different machine. The problem I am having is that the machine with the WOL cable seems to keep turning itself on and sometimes won't let me turn it off! This also causes one of the other computers (both ATX form) to keep turning itself on! I have tried a different WOL cable but have no ideas. Both machines are running XP pro! An ideas how I can sort this???

Check the bios for changing the sensativity of the WOL voltage. Some motherboards have jumpers for this and others not.

Looks like your experiencing wake-on-trash (WOT). A brief explanation would be that when you installed XP, it now has NDIS 5.0. With this version, it has the ability to wake on a whole variety of network traffic. It is up to the NIC driver to filter through what exactly will wake your system. So, it makes sense that since you've enabled your NIC to wake your system, it and the rest of your systems are responding to just the broadcast network traffic on your hub. Some NIC drivers have the ability in their Advanced tab (look in Device Manager under the NIC device) and see if you have the ability to filter the rest of the broadcast packet traffic and only wake up the system with a directed packet (IP or MAC). Most NIC driver vendors don't have this ability though, but check it out.
