I have a Win2000 and a Win98 machine. Both are hooked through a Linksys Cable/DSL Router and Linksys 10/100 Cards. Both machines can access the internet through the router and DSL. Both can send and receive email. The problem is that both machines cannot access the other. The Win2000 machine can see itself and the Win98 machine through network places, computer near me. When Win2000 trys to access the Win98 machine the message says computer not available. The network path cannot be found. NetBIOS over TCP/IP has been enabled. The Win98 machine cannot even see itself nor the Win2000 machine in network neighborhood. Does anyone have any suggestions?? I have been through support w/ Linksys. They say that since all settings are correct and the two machines can access the internet through the cards and router that it is a software issue between 2000 and 98.

Try to reinstall the network card on the win98 system. It might work.

For reinstall do you mean both hardware (another PCI slot) and software (uninstall then reinstall drivers)??

Congratulations! You have just run into a problem that Sooo many people encounter & few totally conquer.

There is a lot to this issue that requires knowledge of Windows NT & Windows networking, because browsing and mapping drives is purely Windows NetBIOS.

Assuming you are using the DHCP of the LinkSys router, & both machines set to use DHCP to configure, e.g. no static IP, WINS, or DNS. You should have a class "C" network in the 192.168.x.x range (Private).

Both machines:
1)Make note of computernames & MAC addresses.
2)Make sure both machine's belong to same Workgroup.
3)Add NetBEUI protocol

W2K machine:
1)If you want to get to resources on the W2K machine, you'll need to create a local account whose name/password is the same as the Windows logon you use to logon to the W95 machine (add this local acct to local Admin group).
2)Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.
3)Create folder and share it (add permissions)

Windows '95 machine:
1)Make sure Client for Microsoft Networks is installed and
a.uncheck Logon to Windows NT Domain
b.check logon and restore network
connections
c.Choose Primary Network logon as Client
for Microsoft Networks
2)Add Microsoft File and Printer Sharing
3)Enable Share level Access Control
4)Create folder & Share it.

Map drives to respective shares on each machine. path: use \\machinename\sharename syntax. Driveletter not important

Hope I havn't missed anything.

*Note: Sometimes it will bomb if you are logged on via DSL & VPN client (PPPTP)

*Last resort - If you still have problems try adding line in lmhosts file mapping IP to computername or add line in autoexec.bat that adds static entry to arp cache
