I've just set up a VPN to my workplace. After I connect to the server, I have no internet access at home. I can open all the files on the server, but I can't browse the internet or check my emails. I'm running Windows SBS 2003 and Windows XP.

From the sounds of it, I'd guess you're getting an IP from your workplaces network once you connect on the VPN. This would allow communication with the LAN there, but not outside.
Talk to your IT people about this. They should be able to set it up so you can do both at the same time.

If you are running a Cisco router then you will need to setup a Split Tunnel.

Talk to your company tech support, see whether they can enable split tunneling on your VPN connection, if not you can only access to company network but not local network once the VPN is up. This is actually a security measure to secure company network from virus, worm or other network attacks.
