I am trying to do a remote desktop connection using XP. However, the first step is to create a VPN connection. When it comes to user name and password. I am confused. Is the user name self create or it is from server. But my company do not have a server.

Why do you say the first step is create vpn?
"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

This is the instruction from the following link;
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...
Please advise what is the appropiate ways?

Why do you think VPN is the first step to using Remote Desktop? It's not. Is the computer you want to access on the same network as the one you want to access from?

Hi Jennifer,
No, it a different network. Ok, let put it this way.
My friend in another city would like my help from his home but I prefer to control his desktop using my keyboard and mouse rather than telling him what to do over the phone. So i try to use the destop remote over the internet to control his computer. How can I do it with the remote desktop on XP.
