Hi all, I am looking for anyone who has had experience with Hughes Satellite (DirecPC) and setting up a connection to an office VPN. One of our users is too far out of the nearest metro center to get Cable, DSL, or even reasonably priced ISDN/Frac T1. We are connecting him to satellite return (2-way satellite connection) using Earthlink as a provider, and are hoping to set him up with VPN access through our Cisco PIX. Hughes and Earthlink are a little wishy-washy in thier tech-support department as to whether or not this is possible. Has anyone out there had experience connecting to a VPN though DirecPC? If so, were there any special hoops you had to jump through?

Thanks in advance for the help,
JDM

the VPN tunnel doesnt matter what ISP or technology you are using, then it should work.

I just spoke with Earthlink and they only support private address on their network. while it still may be possible to support VPN. It becomes a little harder.

I use Checkpoint VPN-1 software and was using Starband satillite service. I need to find a new service as starband changed their suppored modems and I no longer have any speed when I load the VPN over the satellite. Has anyone been able to get a VPN to work with Hughes satellite?

I have the same dilemma as JDM.
I support multiple users throughout the U.S. that work from home, require broadband, but are out of range for cable/DSL.
I have contacted DirecPC on mulitple occasions to ask about running a VPN over satellite and have been told that it will work - BUT, it will probably be slower than a dial-up connection. We are using a Nortel VPN client. We have yet to test it. Does anyone currently have a fuctional VPN over satellite?
Thanks.

I have another problem.

I have been trying to use Xantic and BizarNet service in network for
some time, and was not able to find a quality solution(both Internet via Satellite providers, download only, upload through VPN).

1. If I use Internet connection sharing, I have a feeling that is
not so quality solution although it works in most cases. I have defined VPN connection, directly under win (2000),
Dialup->VPN I also have , in this
case, problems with defining DNS on client computers, if I use my ISP DNS it
works best although I am not sure if that is best solution.

2. I have a feeling that a best solution is to follow manual and
install proxy on main comp., the cheapest and easies one seems Wingate. I
have stumbled on stupid problem, a problem with automatic-dialer, how to
define auto-dialing first dial-up then VPN connection?? I have tried
choosing that VPN connection I have defined originally under win2000, but it
wont dial, hm?? I have also played with RRAS under win2000server, but were
not very happy with outcome.

Could you please advise me in detail on my current problems, or
suggest me a new better solution to follow.....?

Please reply to my mail, I am not sure I am going to be able to read this board soon, mvidos@yahoo.com

I found a company that will set this VPN over satellite. I dont know how much its going to cost or what all is involved. I dont know if I'm going to have to buy new equipment. I've got a PIX box at the server side and the 2 way sat. at the client side.
