Hi,
I'd like to set up a VPN. I'm not sure if the type of network here at my office is secure enough or even capable of accomplishing this.
The network is a peer-to-peer network with very little security, most users log in as administrators.
The network layout is like this:
Windows PC -> Switch/Hub -> Gateway/Firewall -> Internet
That is, all windows pcs connect to a hub. The gateway/firewall is a seperate machine, that all Windows PC's use as their default gateway. The gateway/firewall machine connects to the internet via it's dsl modem.
Since there is no central domain server, (the gateway is a Linux machine that simply gives internet access) would a VPN be appropriate in this situation? I need to gain access to the peer-to-peer shares and to certain IP address within the peer-to-peer network.
I was thinking about setting up a Win2k Server with two network cards -- one connected to the Internet (directly plugged into the DSL modem; it has multiple ports and IPs) and one to the internal peer-to-peer network.
If the Win2k server acts as a VPN, how would it authenticate outside users?
Is this a possible set up, or do I need to build a domain server as well?
Thanks for any help.
