Sorry, this is so wordy, but I am trying to make sure I have every detail you could possibly need covered. I am trying to connect my dad's computer to mine over the internet. we both have Linksys routers BEFSR41 . He has a PppOe DSL connection to the internet, and I have a ?? cable connection to the internet.(not sure what it is called, but I don't have to put in a user name or passoword or anything. It is just connects without having to do ANY set up as soon as the router turns on. ANYWAY, on both computers, I set up a static IP address by going to the LAN connection properties on both computers. going to internet protocol TCP/IP then going to properties. set set them both at 192.168.1. (mine is at .99) and my dad's is at .55)subnetmask 255.255.255.0 Default gateway 192.168.1.1. and the primary DNS is 4.2.2.1 and secondary DNS is 4.2.2.2. I set up my computer to accept incomming VPN connections, and I set up my dad's computer to connect to this VPN. On both routers, are set up as follows under advanced everything is default except for filters are now : SPI Disabled(whatever SPI is) Block WAN request is disabled, Multicast passthrough, is ensabled. IPSec Passthrough is enabled. PPPTP pass through is enabled. Remote management is enabled, Remote upgrade is disabled, and MTU (whatever that is is disabled. UNDER FOWARDING for ports 1723, 50 and 47, 50 and 47 I think did nothing for me by opening, but they're open, I put in those ports like so 1723 to 1723. for all three ports, I have TCP and UDP protocol checked. for my router I have my computer's IP adress 192.168.1.99 put in for the IP address and for my dad's router, I have his. I have all the enable boxes checked. Finally HERES THE PROBLEM!!..I connect his computer to mine, but when I go to find computer on network, it can't find my computers name. the other computers on MY network at my house can find it, but the network at my dad's house cannot. I cannot find his computer either. What else do I need to do? should I change the LAN IP address of one of the routers?

your computer has several ip's at any given time
your internal ip the one you assignted

the ip assigned by your isp

the ip assigned by any network you connect to via vpn

you need the ip assigned by your isp and his isp (these can change on any given day unless you pay for a fixed ip)

You need to setup a lmhost file on each computer pointing to each other.

Try this from your computer

start->run in the open box type this in

\\(your dad's ip address\(the share on your dads computer)

example

\\192.168.0.50\share

your dad's ip address is 192.168.0.50 and
you have a share folder called share on your dad's computer.

If your able to get to that share on his computer you have a Netbios or DNS problem then you need a WINS or setup a lmhost file on both computers.
