I want to setup a VPN server on my home network. I read through this guide: http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networking/xp_vpn_server.htm but I have two questions.

Here is my setup:
router: DLink DI-624 connected to the internet

VPN Server: Behind the router, running windows XP, and set to a static IP address of 192.168.0.101

First, what ports need to be forwarded and what other options need to be setup on my router? The website was a little to vague for me to know exaclty what I need to do for this part. Here is a specs page for the router if it helps http://www.dlink.com/products/resource.asp?pid=6&rid=7&sec=0

Second, if my network currently uses DHCP to assign IP addresses, will selecting "Assign TCP/IP addresses automatically using DHCP" use my router to assign IP addresses as if they are plugged into my router, or do I need to do something special to assing IP addresses using the computer acting as the VPN server?

Thanks for the help!

On that guide you reference, take a look at step 14. If you mark the first bubble, your router will assign the IPs as if the remote computer is plugged right into your router. If you mark the second bubble, the computer you have VPN set up on will assign the IP.

Step 20 covers what ports to open. Some routers have a "VPN Pass through" option which will automatically open the right ports for you. If not, set ports 1723, 500, 50, and 51 to your VPN server (192.168.0.101).

You are all set. I have been running a VPN server on my XP machine behind a d-link router for years now.

All you have to do is to forward 1723 to the Internal IP of the server. Also enable VPN passthrough on the router. It should work. And yes, your router will be the ultimate guy assigning IP addresses. Only a DHCP server can do that , and your router is employed for that.

If theres anything further, feel free to contact me!
