Hi,
i have trouble connecting my laptop (xp prof) to my work VPN. As soon as I log on the VPN I have no acces to any websites, even though I can see the internet is still running. When I then try to enter the remote acces I am denied acces. My router is an Aethra Starvoice 1020 - and I think the problem has got to do with the router. the problem is, I have no idea where the missing link might be??
Can anyone help me, I have been trying to make this work for a very long time now and it seems like no one has the answer???
Thank you
Louise

The problem is most likely not you...it's your job.

Your company is most likely implementing a split tunnel rule. This is a common security rule with company VPNs...

You have to understand that VPNs allow you to securely enter your company's network...if you connect to your company AND the internet at the same time, then you become a whole in the company's firewall because anything coming in on your internet can travel into your company via the VPN. That's called a split tunnel..you are split between the internet and the inner guts of your company. So most companies implement a rule on VPNs to prevent you from accessing the internet at the same time you are connected to the company via the VPN.

There are way's around it, but it wouldn't be practical to implement it..1) if the company finds out you could get in trouble, or 2.) heaven forbid you do do it and you do cause IT security within your company to be compromised.

Ask your company IT department if you REALLY need to use the internet at the same time as the VPN...not sure how well they'll receive that, but they may allow you some exception if its good enough...Else you want to use the internet, then disconnect the VPN.

You may just need to enter the company's proxy settings into IE, Tools, Internet Options, Connections settings, Lan.

You would then be able to access the internet via their proxy server.

Re: Remote Access...I assume you are referring to utilizing Windows XP Pro's Remote Desktop (RDP) utility to control your office PC or are you referring to some other method?

It is possible that they do not allow the usage of RDP and only allow access to the company resources.
Meaning, if you were using a company laptop with all of the company applications such as Lotus Notes or Outlook then you can use those local applications to access the company's network resources that these applications require from the company's servers.

There are a few things here.

1. Internet access. Open your network connections. Right click the VPN and select properties. Click the networking tab. Highlight TCP/IP. Click properties. Click advanced. Uncheck “Use gateway on remote network”.

2. What are you using for remote access?
Are you just trying to browse to a PC or server?
Are you using remote desktop?

There are a lot of variables that can affect connecting to a network. If we don’t know how you are trying to access the network we cant help.
