My brother just got a new Vista computer and he's trying to get the data from his 2K computer onto his Vista computer. The 2K computer doesn't have a CD burner and my brother doesn't own a USB thumb drive. That being the case, I told him the easiest method would be to use a crossover cable.
Here is the way I had him set up the computers:
Vista
Workgroup: WORKGROUP
IP: 192.168.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.12K
Workgroup: WORKGROUP
IP: 192.168.0.25
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1From the Vista computer, if he types "ping 192.168.0.25" he gets replies. But from the 2K computer, if he types "ping 192.168.0.1" he gets timeouts. Also, on the Vista computer if he opens "Network", Vista sees itself, but not the 2K computer.
The 2K computer doesn't have a firewall on it.
Any ideas? Thanks!

On the VISTA PC setup Internet Connection Sharing, that will install a basic DHCP Server, providing the W2K is in same workgroup setting TCP/IP to AUTO should then on rebooting be offered an IP address from VISTA. BTW you have shared docs on W2K with correct permissions I presume ??

Hey guys,
Thanks for the replies! I really appreciate it. I was able to get the date off the computer after all! I never did get 2K to talk to Vista, but Vista was able to see 2K, so I got the data that way. Thanks again!
