We just completed a setup for a client that needed video IM capability. All messengers would do text but only MSN and YAHOO could do audio and video. AIM would not connect when initiating audio or video chat. We finally worked it out by giving the client a public IP address. Anyone have similar experience, and an answer why AIM requires this extra step. We could do AIM within their LAN, AIM must not like NAT from different networks.

If I'm not mistaken, AIM is AOL. If that is correct, that would explain why it's a pain in the you-know-what, doesn't work properly, and requires more steps to make work than anything else does.
Have you looked at netmeeting? If not, you should.
