VERY slow network, but only through hub

Can anyone help?

I'm using a 10baseT network hub (8 ports) to connect two (sometimes more) Win98 PCs with identical PCI network adapters (10Mbit). The connection works but it's VERY slow, about 30-40K/sec. The "collision" LED on the hub blinks while e.g. copying files. The strange thing is, when I use a crossover cable, without changing anything, the connection is much faster (almost 1MB/sec). I've tried different ports on the hub but it doesn't help. Now I know that a hub is slower than crossover-connection, but it can't be THAT much slower.
Please help!!!

Download a sniffer and install it on your computer.

One of three things is happening:
1. your computer settings are not set up right.

2. You have more computers plugged in the hub and a lot of packet collisions are occuring since they all are on the same collision domain.

3. Something is wrong with your hub

*I have a feeling number 2 is not happening

Your network card may be configured for full-dublex or auto-detect does not work correct.
Set it to half-duplex.

start
run
command
netstat -s -n -e -a -r |more

this is the netstat command with all relavant switches in regards to sniffing ports if you want it to cycle leave of the more and enter an integer such as

netstat -s -n -e -a -r 60

will refresh every 60 seconds now

shows all ports and routing table

you are obviously working with a workgroup (more collisions are normal with this config)

try hooking up a server (linux is free)

set up dns and wins also add host tables pointer records etc and you would be shocked at how fast you resolve

Murdock,

If you have a 10baseT hub and 100baseT NIC card, the crossover cable will deffinately run faster. Also, the more computers you add to the hub, the more collision, and slower the transmition becomes. Why don't you try a switch, use the host file, and turn of NetBeui
