I've just connected my second computer up to my ADSL modem and the internet is very slow. Slower than a dialup connection. The other computer which is connected up to the same modem works as good as ever.
My first computer is a 98 machine 500Mhz connected to the internet via a USB port, external ethernet adaptor and then into the modem using RJ-45 connectors. this has worked well over the past few months.
My second computer is an XP machine with 2.4 Ghz processor. I have just installed an ethernet card to network the two computers. I have used a category 5 cable with RJ-45 connectors to connect between the modem and the ethernet card. The internet works on the second computer but is very slow. I think some settings must be wrong but I don't know what to do.
My modem is a speedtouch510 and has 4 RJ-45 connectors at the back to connect 4 computers.

How are you connecting? through the win 98 machine or directly to the modem?

Save yourself some grief and go buy a router for like $30 . Modem --->router---> pc connections . Also USB internet connections are mediocre at best . Get a nic card ($10) and plug it into the router .
