There is a wireless network at my office - 2 wired computers, 2 wireless. 3 of the 4 can get on the network with no problem, but one wireless computer running win 2000 PRO cannot get on the network.
Here's the funny thing: the one that cannot connect to the wireless network says it is connecting, has an excellent signal, and if I go into the router's interface - I can see the problem computer's MAC ID.
But, the problem computer is obtaining a PRIVATE ip address from the router (169.254.23.174) - I try to assign a static IP, but that doesn't help.
I am very frustrated, can anyone offer a suggestion???
THank you

The 169.x.x.x address that your windows 2000 box is
getting is not assigned from the router. Windows is
assigning it to itself after it's DHCP request from the
router times out. Since you don't have a successful
wireless connection, DHCP cannot be successful either.

Check for a newer wireless card driver. Also check to
make sure you have the SSID (name of the wireless
network) typed properly, with the proper case. If security
is enabled on your wireless network, then assure that your
Windows 2000 Pro box supports that security. If it does
not, then though you "associate" with the access point,
your wireless frames aren't going to be understood by the
access point and vica versa.

thanks for the reply, Micah. What you say makes sense, because after reading your post, I checked and found out that sure enough, they also encrypted the network a few days ago. I know this computer was working when the network was unencrypted. I will try removing the encryption, and see if the connection is successful.

Thank you for the replies, sorry it took so long for the follow up. I removed encryption from the router, and it was right back on the internet. Thanks for the help!
