Yesterday we got DSL up and running. Verizon sent a westell wireless modem. The desktop where the modem is connected is running XP. We're trying to connect the laptop in the other room to this modem. Laptop is also running XP. When I called and spent 45 min on the phone with verizon trying all kinds of setting, we couldnt get the laptop to connect to the network. I spoke to 3 different people and all three really didnt know what to do. When I went in earlier to tcp/ip and configured a static IP , it says I'm connected to the network but I can not access the internet. When verizon was having me do the settings they said the laptop should have, the laptop doesnt see the network. Sigh. They are telling me I should pick "obtain IP address auto." and the modem should pick it up. But its not. What settings, or what should I do to get the laptop on the network? When I configured the IP addy and choose the same IP as the desktop a warning pops up on the desktop saying theres a conflict about the same IP addy being used so I know the laptop is being seen. Thank you for your help.

Do you using a router? Setup both the desktop and laptop to obtain IP address and DNS. If you dont have a router, you can only have one machine connected to the router at a time. At that point, you still need to only have it to obtain the IP and DNS automatically.

Sorry... didnt see it was a wireless modem.
Its probably something in the router portion. Maybe you might have to temporarilyu hardwire a machine into that modem to access its interface. Check out to make sure that everything is setup properly.Just an idea. Dont know if thats of any help. Good luck!

Thank you GregH for reponding. When I had verizon on the phone the other night he had me go into the modems set up and we checked all kinds of settings and he said it was all ok. It all looked greek to me so I have no idea. I guess we can have up to 4 computers connected with this wireless modem. When we're connected, are we going through the desktop that is connected to the modem or is the laptop going straight to the modem? I know with win 98 you have to set up workgroups and all but do we need to do that with xp and with this modem we're using? The modem is a Versalink.

No you do not need to be in the same workgroup. I guess it wouldnt hurt to put them all in the same workgroup if you like. T
Make sure on the laptop that you are specifying the correct SSID and to make things simple for now... make sure no WAP or WPE is enabled, no NIC address filtering is on, ect. You have the modem set to use DHCP and DNSWith the laptop, can you ping the router/modem? If you can do that, then it is something in the modem/router.
You are not going through the desktop. It is going through the router and out through the modem.I dont know what else to throw in besides that. Probably stuff you tried already. When you have the laptop on, and you do a ipconfig /all what address are you getting?

I'm not sure about what you said about :
"Make sure on the laptop that you are specifying the correct SSID and to make things simple for now... make sure no WAP or WPE is enabled, no NIC address filtering is on, ect. You have the modem set to use DHCP and DNS".
I can not ping the modem/router or the desktop computer.
The ip addy on the laptop is:
192.168.1.48
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1When I try and ping the router/modem I get and error message of: transmit failed error code 65
I changed the IP to automatic instead of a static one, click on repair connection and it gave the computer the same static IP I had given. So now that part is working, it says im connected to the network, when last time it wouldnt connect unless it had a static IP. Sigh. so I guess I'm getting closer. I can type in the routers IP addy and get the front page but when I click on links it wont go any further.

Ok I figured it out! woo hoo I made sure the setting were what you said and one thing was zone alarm. I had it off! but when I started it back up all of a sudden I was connected to the internet. That zone alarm when its shut down reeks havic on computers! Thank you so much for all your help.
