Hello,
Soon I will be getting Verizon Online DSL. Currently, I have three computers networked via a Linksys 5-port hub. If I wanted to share the DSL service among the three, do I need to purchase a router or can the DSL modem be plugged into the hub's Uplink port? (An RJ-11 phone jack is not a problem; there's one right by the hub.)
I also realize that I could hook it directly to the PC that is currently running Sygate Home Network. I would much rather avoid doing that if I could.
Thank you for your help!! (By the way, the CPU/Ram info is not correct; however, when I change it in My Computing.Net, it stays the same after the page reloads.)

Spend $50 on a Linksys BEFSR41 router (at Best Buy, etc.). It will provide the DCHP host for your network, and provide a built in in-bound firewall. The hub will not share the single IP address, while the router will. You can still use the hub, as the router only has four ports. Just route one of the ports to the hub.

Thanks.
How necessary is the router? (Will it work without it?)

Basically what am I saying is, do I need a router for it to work? The box from the Linksys EFAH05W hub says it is "Perfect for Sharing a DSL or Cable Modem Connection", and the "Cable or DSL Modem may need to be connected to te Uplink port". If I connect it to the port, will it function? Or will it only work with a router?
Thanks again for your help!!

Yes - Verizon will only give you one IP address unless you pay for more. A router will allow you to use multiple devices with your one IP address - a hub or switch will not.
