Specs: Windows Vista
I'm in the process of trying to get one of my older computers to function as a file server, and my goal is to be able to use VNC to connect to the server from almost anywhere. Unfortuantely I'm having a little bit of difficulty figuring out how to use PuTTy properly. every time I try to establish a connection to the machiene, I get an error message telling me the connection request was rejected. Any suggestions?

And yes, I am new to this so try to bear with me and I'll do the best I can to understand you

Have you checked, whether the SSH server is running?
Open a terminal console on the Ubunto box.
Type in:
sudo rcsshd status

I'm not sure whether this command do exist on Ubuntu, if not, try this in the terminal window.
sudo netstat -tapn | grep '\:22'.

If there is nothing listed like:
tcp 0 0* listen
you have to configure your system to use ssh server first.

If ssh server is running, you might have to check, whether port 22 is blocked by your firewall.

Please send a reply, if you solved the problem !!!

My experience with Ubuntu, which I admit is limited, is that the ssh server on it is not enabled by default and you'll have to do it.

Turning it on is actually pretty simple, once you know how to do it (I don't remember offhand what to do as I did it over a year ago). I went and emailed their support people and asked them how to turn it on and they responded quite quickly so I recommend you hit their site and ask them.
