Using a router as a WAP Only

Could anyone tell me if it is possible to use a router's "WAP Only" feature to extend the wireless range of another different router?
I have 2 routers at home. They are:
Linksys WRT54G (802.11G with VPN pass-through) 4-port (acts as a firewall) U.S. Robotics 8054 (802.11G) 4-port
I would like to be able to keep my network on 1 subnet and just use the 2nd router as an access point to extend the first router's wireless range. Is this possible?
If so, do I need to configure the second router's LAN Ip range to match the first one's ? Should DHCP be enabled on both routers? Won't they conflict?

Position the 2 APs where you want them. Then connect the 2 APs physically with a crossover cable for your switch uplink. The APs should have different SSIDs and channels, WEP key can be the same.
Different APs cannot "extend" the range of another AP. There are range extenders just for that reason and they only work with certain APs and are vendor and model specific. Oh, and like Jordan said, turn off DHCP on 1 of the APs.

My US Robotics wireless router will not let me change the IP address to 192.168.0.2. The routers default address is 192.168.123.254 and I had to change it to 192.168.123.253 and it seems to work. Turned off DHCP etc. Is it necessary to use the range suggested at 192.168.0.2? Advise
