use two computers together to increase speed?

Specs: XP, Vista, 7, multiple

Ive been looking through the internet and came across an old post on this website. I read through (without being able to make much sense of the answers) and once i got to end of thread there was a system note which said "this post is quite old, start a new one".... LOL so that is what i am doing!

I have two different computers at my house and i was wondering if there is a "just install software and a couple of cables" way to have them work "together" to increase speed by sharing resources?

have xp, vista, 7, etc... can change up OS's or try linux.. whatever forum determines best! :)

ps. while im asking here i might as well ask this one as well. What is a good software for being able to access my home computers from my smart phone (iPhone) when i am away from my house?

thanks guys!

Short answer: No.
What you are referring to is distributed computing. Except for some very unusual application types this is not a workable idea.
