If you connect the cable modem to a router, then connect the router to a hub, you will be able to connect these two machines quite easily and have room for more later on.

You could get a Router with a built in switch like the Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch. That way no hub is needed, which means one less place to have a failure.

Linksys Router definite choice..
Nice built-in utilities.. DHCP, logging etc.

What a unit for around $70

Router is good thing, but u'll encounter problem when playing same game online (e.g. Starcraft), can't join same room. If using a hub or switch, expect to pay your cable company extra tips to have IP address for each computer (for which no worry about any network problem except hacker trying to break in.)

actaully you don't HAVE to have any of them. you can do it with a crossover cable (and add a second NIC to the primary machine assuming your cable modem is ethernet, if it is USB you can just use one). see this post for the details as I explained to to someone ise the other day : http://www.computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/121741.html

all of the ways will work but, this is the cheapest and it works just as well as the more expensive ways.
