Hi Guys,

I have a USB modem connected to my PC for accessing internet.. i want this internet connection to be shared to some wi-fi transmitter so that i could use it on my ipod touch, PSP and HTC Touch... in my experience i think that i should buy a wireless router and share my USB internet connection to this router.. so that this router can act as a wifi hotspot for my USB internet .. but it's my theory and i am not sure whether this work or whatever.. please tel me whether this is feasible adn if so what router i need to buy . basically what stuffs i need.. this would be really helpfull. thanks

You should be able to use a wireless SOHO router. I would recommend buying one with 4 LAN ports. Typical setup is as follows:

Internet >> DSL/Cable modem >> SOHO Router >> clients

As to which router to buy, I like most of the products Linksys makes but especially like their WRT54GL's because the firmware in them is linux based and you can use 3'd party firmware like Tomato or DD-WRT

CurtR, I believe the OP has one of those USB modems that utilize cellphone network to connect to his ISP wirelessly.

In that case sharing this internet connection is not as simple as the usual cable/DSL type service.

And to depakjan, who asks "cant i do this with some 20$ wireless router or something like that"

short answer No.

Your PC needs to be equipped with a NIC ( Probably has at least one) and you need to be able to create a bridge between the USB modem connection and the NIC in order to share the internet connection. You may need some kind of proxy software although Win7 may have the necessary inbuilt in ICS.

You then need some kind of wireless router or accesspoint connected to the NIC. In my experience the cost of routers & accesspoints is similar and you aren't going to get one for $20.

I'm not even certain you will easily set up such a network.

i dunno why does this get complicated.. i mean if i have cable modem i could easily buy a router and make it a hotspot... but if i have a USB connection it gets complicated.. WTH... are there any other means at all ??,...

Doesn't ICS work with these routers?? my USB modem sets up a dial-up connection.. and i have shared this connection to my other PC in LAN .. it worked like a charm... now all i need to know is like if i get a wireless router or some wireless LAN adaptor like these

wont i be able to share my USB conection to these routers and make it a hotspot? so that my PSP's, Ipod's and Pcoket PC's can join in?

or
Can i buy a NIC card or something??
