upload/download speed problems

I have a 128k/1.5mb aDSL connection, and my question is: When I am uploading something, why are my download speeds also affected (tremendously)?. And is there any way to prevent this from happening? I heard that it had to do with some weakness with Tcp/IP protocol, but I'm not sure...

By uploading, you are using up bandwidth, so obviously your download speeds will be affected. you will not necessarily download and upload at those speeds. those are max speeds, which you will probably never reach. it all depends on the quality of the phone line, the lenght of the phone cable, and the distance to the central office.
