Oh wow, we need so much more information in order to trouble shoot this.

What Version of Windows are you running?
Which update and if it was a Service Pack which one?
What does IPCONFIG return?
What happens when you PING YAHOO.COM?

Going by the little information you gave, I would suggest going into the Add Remove Programs and remove the update.

Got to Love Black Tuesday. Thanks Mircosquot for the update.

Internet Exploder well there is your problem. Have you tried Firefox or Google Crome?

IPCONFIG is the command you run to see if you got a connection. You run it from the CLI.

- Click on Windows Sphere
- Type CMD in the search box and get the Command Line.
- Type IPCONFIG in the command line and see what you get for an Physical IP address. It should be 192.168.x.x format.
- Type PING YAHOO.COM to see if you are communicating to the internet.

Some basic troubleshoot tools.

I am guessing your problem is with Internet Explorer 8, Uninstall the update and it will probably fix your problem or better yet go with Firefox it is way better and safer than I.E.

I don't use IE i use firefox already, it when i installed the most recent Windows Updates, IE 8 was one of them. i tried uninstalling the updates and nothing happened. i tried pinging yahoo and it said it couldn't even find it...

remember i dont use IE It just updated to 8 on its own.
all i know is that in the device manager it says that my ISATAP Network Adapter is "Windows cannot load the proper drivers (Code 31)"

If you can't ping and you are getting driver issues then, like you said it is not the I.E. 8. It is your stack. I would uninstall your Network Adapter and Reinstall it. This should rebuild every thing and you should be able to ping yahoo.

All pinging does is take all of the software out of the equation and narrow the troubleshooting downto hardware.

That sounds like it did not uninstall right and Windows is not able to reinstall the driver. Who is the Manufacture of your NIC?

Try going to their webside and see if they have a cleanup utility that will fix this. You might want to down load their latest drive because it sounds like the current driver is not compatable with the new update.

I know you don't have access to the internet right now so you will need to do it from a friends computer. It may be easier just to go and by a Windows Vista Compatible NIC at your local computer store because they only cost between 9 and 25 dollars and you have probably spent more than that in gas money going to your friends house to use their internet.

Another trick would be to call the computer's manufactures help line if the computer is still in warranty. If it is Dell or HP they will have heard about the problem from one of their other customers and know the exact fix.

NIC stands for Network Interface Card. It is the card in your computer that the ethernet cord plugs into. It may be built into your motherboard.

If it is an Acer computer you should be able to go to their website and plug the model number of your computer in and get the latest drivers for your computer.

Being that it is out of warranty would indicate that this computer is more than a year old. How old is it?
