I finally got my windows me networked with my sons xp. We can see each others computers. When doing the steps I noticed a couple things that I don't think are right.
1)when I go into his network it has 2 icons. 1) WIRELESS NETWORK CONNECTION states connected, firewalled, linksys wireless G pci adapter. 2) icon LOCAL AREA CONNECTION states network cable unplugged, fire, intel(r) pro/100ve network.
But everything shows it is working.
2)To quickly obtain the TCP/IP configuration of a computer, open Command Prompt, and then type ipconfig. From the display of the ipconfig command, ensure that the network adapter for the TCP/IP configuration you are testing is not in a Media disconnected state. (HIS SHOWS THIS).
How should I correct these issues? Or should I just leave it alone?
3) I have a canon printer on my windows me that I am trying to share with him on his xp. I have files and printing shared. When I go to my icon or try to install printer it states, The server for the cannon i850 does not have the correct printer driver.
Could the first 2 problems have anything to do with this?

Lisa

It sounds like the first 2 things you mention deal with the local area connection which is the ethernet card that uses a special wire for accessing the web and sharing. He uses a wireless adapter so it doesn't matter that it says its not connected. Are you saying you can use the printer from your computer but from your son's it says you don't have the correct drivers?.Do you have a driver cd or diskette to install on his computer?.

Then I guess I won't worry about the first 2 things.
The printer has been on my computer and works great.
I went to add printer on his xp, it says to chose 1) local printer attached to this computer or 2) network printer or printer on another computer. Then it has a big i and it states to set up a network printer not attached to a print server use local printer option.

Then it states which port, I didn't know so I chose \\Lisa\printer (lan manager printer port) when clicked it states I don't have the correct drivers.

Then it states to chose printer. My printer canon i850 is not in the list so I clicked have disc, it states insert disc and make sure correct drive is selected. I selected D drive that is his cd drive. Then it comes up. The specified location does not contain information about your hardware.
I checked on microsoft and my printer is compatable with xp.

Use the second option to connect to printer on another computer. It will browse the network for a printer. If it doesn't find it then try \\computer name\printer or \\computer name\canon i850.Alot of times the driver cd will have many drivers on it and for the different operating ststems. If there are multiple drivers make sure your trying the ones for xp.Sometimes i've had to try driver after driver before finally finding the one that works.

Would I be better off downloading from canon website?

First put the driver cd in his cdrom and browse through it to see if it has drivers for win xp.If it doesn't then check their website for updated drivers for your printer.Did you try step 2 to see if it would find your printer?.I've installed things before and had to try driver after driver on the cd until i found the one that works.

Well, I installed the driver into my documents folder, went to the wizard and put canon and didn't put anything into the right side, well it downloaded the wrong print driver. deleted that and found my printer in \\lisa\printer browsed for the file I downloaded and it showed finished. I printed a test page it was fine, tried to print an e-mail and only got the header. Tried again and it printed. I will keep testing it.
I do have a few last questions.
I heard when you have computers networked you should never turn off your internet or computers. Is this true??
I mentioned before my son and I never had network passwords or windows passwords. I did put a network password on mine during all steps. Is it needed? His has no passwords.

My computer is turned off every night and still have no troubles connecting when it is restarted. The only thing i have to do again is re-enter the password to get into the other computer.

I would like to thank you for all the help you have given me. Looks like I am up and running fine so far. I will have to still investigate to see if I must use this login in when the computer goes on. A bit of a pain. Thanks again.
