About 50% of the time, when I try to connect to my apartment's network (which is the type that is accessible with just an ethernet cord), the Network and Sharing Center shows two connections: the normal one and another "unidentified network". Because there are multiple connections, Vista will not allow access to the Internet. (Or so says the diagnostic program run through Internet Explorer).

Both connections are coming through the same port, so I can't disconnect one and not the other. I've tried to merge the two or delete the bad one, but the unidentified network doesn't even show up in the list of networks to merge and/or delete. The administrator thinks its my settings, but was unable to tell me how to fix them...I had no problems until getting a new laptop with Vista, and my roommate who is running XP shows only the normal network. I've also spoken to others running Vista who've had the same problem and others who haven't.

I've tried disabling then re-enabling the port; sometime the other connection is gone after this, but usually it is not. What could be the problem, and how might I fix it?

Thanks for any help you can give me! Laymen's term greatly appreciated ;)

Explain your setup. Is it a cable connection with a modem and a router?
Modem > Router > All PCs?
Does the router handle wireless at all?
Have you disabled it?

when you have the two networks showing go to a cmd prompt and type ipconfig /all and post those results for further advice.

Why is there two connections showing up? This is suspicious.

Jeruvy its local not like what you see with a router. Most likely an enabled 1384 port or wireless port. Also likely someone clicked on bridging which is why its not working. Also why I asked for a ipconfig /all
