Hopefully someone can help me because this is driving me mad, literally. I have Verizon DSL running into a router that is connected to our two computers and a printer. And the printer isn’t really an issue since it was recently purchased. This has been going on for months though. My wife’s laptop is connected wirelessly, but this also does not seem to matter since she was on her “old” desktop when it was happening before. The DSL modem is a Westell and it is running into a LinkSys wireless router, my computer and the printer are hooked up by CAT5 since wireless is waste of money in my opinion for an immobile desktop. This network will run fine for about 2 or 3 weeks, we can share files, we can both print on each others printers and the internet runs great on both computers. Every two or three weeks though I will get a limited or no connectivity warning on my computer. I can usually switch Ethernet ports (I have 3 now for this reason) and it will start working again, once in a while my wife’s computer will even lose its connection when this happens, but her connection is restored once I switch ports. Once I go through all 3 ports though I am out of luck. I can usually hook my computer directly to the DSL and it will get a connection, if I try to go through the router though I can’t even talk to the router to manipulate its settings, my computer refuses to talk to the router on any ports. Usually what I have to do is reset EVERYTHING and sometimes even reinstall my network cards and then run the whole network setup again, sometimes twice, before it starts working again. This time though I can only get online direct with one of my network cards, the rest give a limited connectivity warning even though they have been uninstalled and reinstalled. My computer refuses to talk to the router even though it has been reset and will only connect to the DSL. I have no idea what its doing this time. It usually takes me 4 or 5 hours to get it working again, but I’ve been trying for two days now, I know the router is good because my wife’s computer can talk to it, it just won’t get on the internet. Why would my network cards “go out” one at a time every two weeks and refuse to talk to the router. And why would my computer be able to get on the internet and not a functioning router. I’ve been suspecting my firewall since it started doing it again when I went back to zone alarm, but I uninstalled it and I still can’t connect. I wish I could give more details but I am completely lost as to what is going on, I’m a college student and I don’t have time to do this every two weeks. I’ve even talked to networking guys at work and they even have no idea why it’s doing this. Please help if you can, thanks in advance for any ideas.

I think you already know what you need to do. Replace the router. It can't reliably talk to the internet or the pcs.

Golly gee wilerkers everyone! Learn to Internet Search

I agree. Just because your wife's comp can talk to it doesn't mean your router is good. I've never heard of Westell. Better get a Linksys or Belkin.

One more note: In my opinion, wireless is the best. Once you get it configured right, it's amazing.

westell are dodgy. The first reply is right thought, get a combined adsl modem/router

Well I wouldn't just go out and chuck the router without at least going to your router makers website and get the latest firmware update for the router and install that . Sometimes a firmware update will fix things like this .
