Unable to ping friend on ADSL

I have a friend on Bigpond ADSL and I am unable to ping them. I am trying to use Remote Desktop to connect to their computer. They are using a Thomson 530 ADSL modem. Do they have to do anything there end.
The friends PC has to be running Windows XP Pro or use a third party remote desktop application such as TightVNC.
Their firewall is probably blocking the ping and to use Remote Desktop your friend has to have Remote Desktop turned on.
Have them go to System Properties, Remote tab and place a tick next to Allow users to connect remotely to this computer. They will need to create an account for you from that same page.
Turning it on will automatically configure the Windows Firewall to allow the connection (but not the ping).
If your friend is utilizing an additional firewall then they will need to configure it to allow the connection too. (port forward on port 3389).

It could be the ISP is blocking pings. Some do.

Are there any devices between the PC and the modem...like a router? Does your friend have internet connectivity?
