Hello,
I am unable to load web pages from the internet. I have a cable internet connection at home. I'm using a 3Com modem via ethernet cable with a 3Com NIC. My operating system (Windows XP Home Edition SP1) says that I'm connected to the internet and Device Manager says that the network card is working with no problems. When I open Internet Explorer, (across the bottom of the window) it'll say that the web site is found, but the page will never load. This has led me to believe that I'm making some kind of connection to the internet, just that it's really, really, really slow. My internet connection is working along with my modem because I've hooked up my 133 MHz Dell 128 MB RAM computer and have been able to surf the web. I've restarted my modem and 1 GHz CPU many times, but no luck in loading web sites.
This problem started about 3 days ago when I installed a new video card (ATI Radeon 7500 64MB). Also, I installed the software that came with the card. Prior to this, I had no problems. I have Norton Anti-virus, and have ran adware and spyware checks. My network card was in PCI slot 1. Today, I moved it to PCI slot 2, but I'm still experiencing the same problem. I've also uninstalled, then reinstalled my network card, but again, problem not solved.
I'm currently running:
1 GHz Dell with an Intel chip
Windows XP Home Edition SP1.
256 MB of RAM
10 GB Harddrive
DVD ROM
CD R/RW
64 MB ATI Radeon 7500 video card

Check Under Tools>Internet Options>Connections and make sure that there is no check mark in the Automatic Proxy detection box. (Or any box on that page for that matter. Everything should be unchecked.)

If you have a firewall, it might be blocking something (like advertisements). Sometimes I have to disable my firewall in order for websites to pop up.

try downloading another browser such as netscape and see if it works. I personally don't like Internet explorer for all the problems.
You could also try doing a repair on the internet explorer. Do you recieve a valid ip? can you release/renew ip? Ping 127.0.0.1; Ping www.yahoo.com; Ping 204.71.200.75; If you can't ping 127...tcp/ip is corrupt. reinstall. If you can ping by ip but not url and can release/renew ip then its a winsock issue. Its wxp its pretty easy ... insert wxp cd. rename winsock and wsock32 files to .old ... run sfc /scannow...reboot and you should get online. Go to microsoft.com for more indepth procedures. hope this helps.

Thanks to everyone for your advice! Last night before any responses were make to this thread, I decided to tackle the hardware first before the software. I pulled out my my 3Com NIC (uninstalled it in XP too) and replaced it with a spare network card I had laying around. The problem was then solved. I was once again surfing the net at broadband speeds. But, I'm still curious if the problem was due to a software issue or just a bad card. . . . . Thanks again!
