i am trying to play a network game (worms 2) with a home network. Everytime i type in the other cpu's address it says "unable to connect to specified ip address"

one thing: we both have the same address (i don't know if that is normal or what since we are using a router and a cable modem.)

any general suggestions?

No it is not normal for two computer on the same network to the same address. If you are using a router you need to set each computer to get their IP address via DHCP. That way you are sure of having different address.

Right click on Lacal Area Connection in Netwrk connections. Select properties. Hightlight TCP/IP and selct Obtain IP Address Automaticlyand Obtain DNS Automaically.

Go back to Network connection, right click on LAN connection again and select repair. It should then come up with an IP obtained from your router. The DNS address will be the LAn address of your router.

You will both then be able to use the internet at the same time.

Something has just occured to me. Are you playing this game over the Internet or a LAN. If it is the former it is normal for two computers to have the same address as you will be on different networks. To play the game you need the other players WAN address, the one that is supplied by his ISP, not his LAN address which could be the same as yours.

Then my first reply applies. You both need to have different IP addresses.

yes....you need different IP addresses for the local network, disregard your assigned IP from the ISP....

give machine one: 127.0.0.1 and machine 2: 127.0.0.2

These are private IP address. It should work. Make sure the machines are part of teh same workgroup.

Good luck

127.000.000.001 wont work either. Every Windows computer has that IP address in it. It is the address of the local server.

Best to use a address in the range 192.168.000.001-254. Or better still get a DHCP address from the router.

127.0.0.1 is the loopback address. You will not be able to use this IP address anyhow.

There are MANY local private IP addresses that can be used, but the most common for smaller networks is 192.168.0.x

Is the router assigning IP addresses to the PC's dynamically?

The computers do no need to be part of the same workgroup. As long as the IP addresses are in the same subnet everything should be fine.

Can BOTH PC's get access to the internet at the same time?

If you set everything with a static IP it would be fine, however this isn's always recommended.

Router IP = 192.168.0.1
PC 1 = 192.168.0.10
PC 2 = 192.168.0.20

Subnet = 255.255.255.0

Gateway for both PC's = 192.168.0.1
