I have 1 port in which i need 3 users to attach to, i was thinking my best bet would be to get a switching hub, rather than a passive or intellegent hub. Is this the best way to go, if so, or if not, any recommendations on hardware.

one port? Do you mean like in dsl internet access or just that you need to increase capacity to a room?

If internet get a soho router. If capacity only consider a switch not a hub.
