I have a laptop with a wifi connection to my home WLAN. It uses printers and internet connection when I am at home through the dlink router (DHCP)
I plan to buy a Wireless Broadband Dongle so that I can access WWW etc when away from home.
My question is: How will these two connections interact. Will I have to stop the dongle when I want to use the wifi connection? and vice versa.

Yes you will need to stop one or the other depending on what you are doing.

You could consider hardware profiles so you have a home boot and a road warrior boot with each using the device it should.
