Two ADSL Lines

Subject: Two ADSL Lines
OS: Win 2003 Server
CPU/Ram: Intel Dual Core/4GB
Model/Manufacturer: HP
Comment:
I need to have redundancy on my Internet connection. I have two BT lines and want to connect an ADSL router to each so that if one fails then the other continues to service the network.

The general plan is that each router would be connected to a separate network card in the server.

Can I do this and is there anything special I need to know?

There's always more new things to learn than there is time to learn them so the more I know the less I know.

Won't work. You need a dual wan port router.
Consider that you can only have one gateway. How are you going to failover the gateway? Manually change it? Kinda defeats the purpose of failover. Dual wan port router will load balance the two and if one fails will automatically take care of it. It would be transparent to the server and network.

Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search

As far as I know you can have two routes to the internet with two isp's and two nic's.

It would depend on what you use. In most browsers you have a choice of automatically detect setting to the network. If you use other apps then you'd have to use a proxy pac file to select gateways.

Most setups use either a computer or dedicated device to do more than failover. The plan would be for both load sharing and failover.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

quote:"On disjointed networks, this can lead to lost connectivity and subsequent termination of active sessions with computers on remote networks connected through the first gateway."

Won't give you the benefits of automatic failover or load balancing the links when both are up. Software is never as good as hardware.

Now look at cost. No way you can provide a server running a proxy for the price of one of these units

You should buy two of the same and configure them the same so if the unit fails you just drop in the replacement.

Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search

One could run a virtual machine and not have to buy anything.

As above see the cost of a dedicated device or the time to config an old computer to do the same thing. The dedicated devices are as easy as it would get to provide failover plus other features.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.
